Taste Skill: stop your agent building the average landing page

An agent skill that gives Claude Code and Codex an art direction, real credited photographs and a browser check, so pages stop looking AI-generated. How it works, its stars and how to install it.

Ask any coding agent for a website and you get the same page: centred hero, three feature cards, purple gradient. Taste Skill changes the brief. It gives the agent an art direction, real pictures, and a way to check its own work in a real browser.

What is this repo

Taste Skill is an open-source agent skill (design-taste-frontend) for Claude Code, Codex and any agent that supports skills. It's built from a study of 247 curated sites, and works with React, Vue, Svelte or plain HTML because its rules are about design, not frameworks.

A build runs in six steps:

  1. Reads the brief and lists what only this client has
  2. A script deals three of 20 researched directions, and the agent picks one
  3. Finds the idea: one sentence tying the client's own material to that direction
  4. Builds with real photographs and footage from open collections, credited on the page
  5. Checks the page in a real browser at three widths and fails it on "slop"
  6. Looks at its own screenshots and fixes the top three problems, for up to three rounds

A build takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes and a few hundred thousand tokens. It's for pages you care about, not quick mock-ups.

Since v2.1 it also handles dashboards and app screens: it picks an app style taken from real products and checks for quiet panels, aligned figures, colour used only on data, and a phone layout where the navigation folds away.

Where the pictures come from

Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons, Openverse and the Met. It only offers public domain, CC0, CC BY and CC BY-SA files, and puts the credits on the page. Swap them for the client's own photos when you have them.

How to install it

1. Check the requirements

  • To do: Node.js 22 or newer
  • To do: Chrome, Edge or Chromium installed, for the browser checks
  • To do: Network access to find pictures. No API keys needed

2. Install the skill

bash
npx skills add https://github.com/Leonxlnx/taste-skill --skill "design-taste-frontend"

Or as a Claude Code plugin

Run these inside Claude Code. The skill is namespaced as taste-skill: so it won't clash with your other skills:

bash
/plugin marketplace add Leonxlnx/taste-skill
/plugin install taste-skill@taste-skill

/plugin update upgrades it later.

Or in Codex

bash
codex plugin marketplace add Leonxlnx/taste-skill
codex plugin add taste-skill@taste-skill

Looking for the older skills?

high-end-visual-design, minimalist-ui, industrial-brutalist-ui and the other v1 skills moved to taste-skill-classics with the same install names:

bash
npx skills add https://github.com/Leonxlnx/taste-skill-classics --skill "high-end-visual-design"

Worth a look

The design study behind the 20 directions is worth reading even if you never install it. There's also TasteCode, a free desktop app with the skill and a design agent built in.
